Steelhead
Every
winter thousands of these ocean going Rainbow Trout leave their Pacific
saltwater life and return to the California rivers and creeks where they were born. Once
acclimated to the freshwater, these adult Steelhead swim upstream seeking
the same water where their life began. As they battle the currents, flee
from predators, and fight the urge to take a fishermans bait, the Steelhead
begin to change. The closer they come to their spawning grounds the Steelhead
loose the chrome and black colors that had served as camouflage out at
sea. Now their backs become green, their bellies turn dark and they gain
a bright red stripe revealing their Rainbow Trout ancestry. Upon reaching
their natal waters it is time to spawn. When spawning is complete, Steelhead
that have the strength to re-run the gauntlet FishTravel - palm coast fishing charters, return to the ocean and
hope to one day spawn again. Unlike their Salmon cousins, a Steelhead
doesnt die after spawning.
All The Trout Are Beautiful. But this one of sea species
seemed more than beautiful. He was all muscle. He looked exactly what
he was, a fish spirit-incarnate, fresh run from the sea, with opal and
pearl hues of such delicate loveliness that no pen or brush could portray
them. He brought the sea with him and had taken on the beauty of the river
